Where did Halloween originate?
Halloween originated
from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around November 1st to mark the end of summer and the harvest. The Celts believed this was a time when the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead blurred, and ghosts of the dead returned to Earth. To ward off spirits, they would light bonfires and wear costumes. The holiday was later influenced by Christianity, with the evening before All Saints' Day (November 1st) becoming known as All Hallows' Eve, or Halloween.

- Halloween traditions: During Samhain, Celts would wear costumes to avoid being recognized by spirits, light bonfires, and leave out food to appease them.
- Christian influence: In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a time to honor all saints, called All Saints' Day. The evening before became known as All Hallows' Eve, and over time, the name was shortened to Halloween.
- Evolution in America: Halloween was brought to the United States by colonists. Over time, it blended with other traditions and evolved into a holiday with parties, ghost stories, and the traditions of dressing up and going door-to-door for food or money, which eventually became trick-or-treating for candy.
